Work in Process...

When you start a project, it's nice to know the steps involved and what to expect at each step. In these three efforts, you can see a kitchen, a family room, and an home entrance taking shape from start to finish.  Of course, every project will have it's own, unique "personality", but these illustrate some of the more common steps:

  • removing the old material

  • framing the new structure

  • installing drywall and lighting

  • and painting, installing fixtures, and finishing the project.

This kitchen felt cramped with ceilings that were too high, resulting in poor lighting. The client wanted a well-lighted, warm look. The first step was lowering the ceiling and framing the work. Drywall and new lighting were installed, and all counters, cabinets and appliances were removed. Brand new counters, cabinets and lighting achieved a warm cozy feeling, but with better lighting and more functionality.
The Family Room
This family room also suffered from high-ceiling lighting. Our client also wanted a new classic fireplace to replace the little self-contained unit... and to reconfigure the wall with new windows. We framed soffits to lower the lighting and achieve warmer lighting. Then we removed the old fireplace and the large window over the old fixture. The project takes shape with framing for the soffits, a new wide hearth, floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and new windows on either side of the fireplace. The finished room has lowered lighting, a stone hearth that unifies the room, and a spectacular stone open-hearth fireplace. Also notice the new tall window on the right... there's another on the left.
The Living Room

This main entrance was completely open to the living room. Our client wanted to better-define and separate the living room and lower the hallway ceiling. We preserved the open feeling of the room, but defined it with an open bookcase divider and an arch that carried the theme of the arched front door. Here is the project at the drywall stage where you can see the bookcases taking form. The finished divider now defines the living room as a formal room, and integrates with the architecture of the hall and front door.
These three examples were all for one client, and you can see how we integrated the family room and kitchen into a warm friendly gathering place.
